I've been using a modified Shangri-La Diet (adding portion control to standard SLD) for the past 12 months with good results (-89.4 lbs since May 2006). My SLD dose is two tablespoons of flax oil a day. My favorite thing about this diet is that I'm losing weight without wanting to eat my arm off.

85 lbs down. 22.8% Body Fat. "Metabolic Age": 18. 15 lbs to go, though I'm focusing more on body fat right now. Would like to get down to 20%, but no great pressure. Life is awesome. :)

Was hoping to make 80 lbs lost before my one-year anniversary on this diet, but didn't quite make it. Which is fine - I've found that the whole not-losing- weight-on-a-schedule thing is pretty crucial to my mental well being and makes it easier to think about my current eating and exercise routine as a lifestyle change and not a temporary fling. Still, would be nice to make it back to my pre-Greece weight (134.8) before June. Hope to see it soon!

Back from 2 weeks in Greece, where I deliberately stopped taking my SLD oil and overate (hey, it was Easter, it was Greece, and the food was divine ^_^;;). Gained around 14 lbs though, which is a lot. So it's back to 2 Tbl of Flaxseed oil in the morning and walking on the weekends. Hopefully I can add in some weight-training next week or the week thereafter.

Insurance exam is over, whoot! Back to non-stressful weight-loss. My Tanita tells me my body fat % is around 30% - next goal is to see that first number turn into a 2.

Aw, thanks Dan! 8 lbs in one week is a little too fast for my comfort, actually. I'd rather have your rate of weight loss - it's just so much healthier. Thanks for the good wishes and good luck with your efforts!

Hi gigi b! The Shangri-La Diet uses "flavorless calories" (either sugar water or oil) as a means to suppress your appetite. It's basically a natural appetite suppressant. You can read more about the diet here:

http://ethesis.blogspot.com/2006/11/shangri-la-diet-after-one-year-and-70.html

http://www.sethroberts.net

but I really recommend picking up the book if you want to try it yourself.

Up 2.6 lbs this morning. Third gain ever on the diet, and the longest plateau so far. Would have been nice to have shown a loss, given all the walking I did last week, but again, I'm pretty sure this is muscle: the Tanita has me up 3.2 lbs of muscle from the 1/2/2007 weigh-in, with a decrease of 1.0% to 30.5% body fat, and calorie-wise, my average was 1365 per day for the week. The "Metabolic Age" measurement calculation has me down three more years to a 35, which is only one year above my actual age. So, that's somewhat encouraging. OTOH, I'm now just slightly overweight (at 25.1 BMI (using Imperial) and 25.6 BMI (using Metric)). This is a bit frustrating, if only because I have to schedule a Life Insurance physical soon and I would very much like to be in the "Normal" weight category so they won't charge me a higher rate. I'm seriously considering a day fast before the physical to get my weight down to 154 again. Assuming I see another gain or a hold next week, I guess I'll finally be entering the annoying "fluctuation period" of weight loss on SLD. The next few months will not be easy ones in terms of sticking with the diet, either - lots of social events and traveling, both of which have always doomed previous diet attempts for me. But I'm going to try to be as consistent as I can with the oil and get as much walking in as possible - I think these two factors really helped to guarantee steady losses for the first 33 weeks I've been on the diet.

(Alternatively, I'm just PMS-ing and retaining water per the norm. But I'm pretty sure this isn't the case - my hydration level at weigh-in time was only 0.8% more than it was last week. Hope springs eternal, though.)

Thanks for the comment, Karin! Yeah, that's the goal. I would love to have a Body Fat calculation in the 20s (even though I know the scale tends to be off for that metric, due to the error caused by hydration). Hopefully I'll see the 20s sometime this year. Upward and onwards!

Hi Shiny Penny, gratulations to the muscle gain! Sounds very convincing and maybe at some point the Tanita will make you a twenty somthing again!

Up 1.0 lbs at this week's weigh-in, but my Tanita tells me I'm down 2.3% to 31.5% fat, and up 4 lbs of muscle since last week, with a "metabolic" age of 38. Only four more years till my metabolic and chronological ages meet up. :)

Up 1.8 lbs at this week's weigh-in (first ever weight gain on SLD), but seeing as I stayed on my eating plan during the preceeding week and walked a total of 33 miles on the weekend, I'm pretty sure this is just pre-menstrual bloat.

And my Tanita reads me as having gained 4.4 lbs of muscle, so it thinks I'm 41 again. :)

So, I weighed in at 157 this morning. Part of me is happy since it's the 150s! And I'm only 3 lbs. away from having a "normal" BMI. But I'm also annoyed with myself since I know a good part of the five lbs I lost come from muscle - skipped all of my walking sessions this weekend. And why did I skip? I skipped because my car got towed on Friday - this one event threw me off my routine completely. -_- I can't stop thinking about it even now. I'm fantastically annoyed with myself for letting this one thing throw me off so much. I'm glad that I'm in the 150s, of course, but this is not the way I wanted to get here. 5 lbs down in one week is just too much.

So this weekend I'm going to rededicate myself. I finally got some winter walking pants (Danskin yoga pants just aren't thick enough for temperatures in the 30s and 40s, I've found ^_^;;) and some wicking tops. Still need to get an overall windproof insulated shell though - the wind cuts right through my fleece jacket.

And my Tanita thinks I'm 46 (*weeps for lost muscle*). :(

Only had lost a pound at my weekly weigh-in this morning, but I couldn't get too depressed about it since my Tanita no longer thinks I'm 50! :) My Tanita scale has a feature that also measures your body fat and muscle mass and then calculates your "metabolic age". I've been weighing in at 50 years of age ever since I started back in May. Of course I'm only 33. ^_^;; So I was quite happy to see the Tanita's age readout this morning - I'm now a spry 48-year-old. It's nice to see the walking paying off. Hopefully it won't take another 28 weeks to get down to my real age.
